Travel the Historic National Road, which propelled the nation’s westward expansion. The first federally funded road, authorized by Congress in 1806, the National Road is now a federally designated scenic byway. From the port of Baltimore, retrace immigrant journeys along the road in their quest to forge new lives, claim land, explore new markets, and build a nation. Explore the cities and classic old “pike” towns that grew along America’s Main Street. Drive from Baltimore, through Ellicott City, Frederick, Hagerstown, and Cumberland, for almost 200 miles in Maryland, and 800 miles to the Mississippi River at St. Louis.
